A three-Day celebration was held at City Center Rotana to commemorate the 119th Philippine Independence day hosted by the United Filipino Organizations of Qatar (UFOQ) starting from June 25 to June 27 which various Filipinos and Filipino communities from all over Qatar attended as a way to show support and promote Philippine tourism.
According to The Peninsula Qatar (2017), the events and activities that were held were based on the four pillars of "Beautiful Philippines" which are Kaugalian (character), Kasipagan (Industriousness), Kagandahan (beauty), and Bayanihan (cooperation). For this event, the United Filipino Organizations of Qatar (UFOQ) reached out to Kulinarya Qatar for the first time and was also made possible due to the support of the Philippine Embassy in Doha. Apart from the usual talent performances from different schools and Filipino organizations during the three-day event, side line events were also held at meetings rooms which offered a series of free lectures or discussions such as journalism, photography, film making and more. A wide range of authentic Filipino cuisine was readily available at the venue for the guests to enjoy.
There were several new additions in this year's PIDC such as Philippine festival parade which showcased the diverse festivals in the Philippines. The search for 'Lakan at Lakambini ng Kalayaan' is one of the highly-anticipated events for this year's celebration. There were a total of 20 official candidates (Male and Female) which represented the 10 Filipino organizations in Qatar. This event also served as a platform for numerous Doha-based Filipino fashion designers for they were given the task to create several clothing piece for each contestant which reflected the rich culture and traditions of the Philippines. Our very own Ms. Janela Joy Pigon Cuaton (Miss Toursim International 2015 - 1st Runner Up) and Ms. Justin Mae San Jose (Mutya ng Pilipinas - Tourism International 2016) were also awaited guests during this occasion. The pageant took off on the 27th of June which was dedicated to the Talent Competition while the Coronation Night was held on the 28th of June. Ultimately, Martina Estrada and Karle Haven Reyes of Balitang Q won the title of the first ever Lakan at Lakambini ng Kalayaan 2017.
The AFJQ (Alliance of Filipino Journalists in Qatar) Gawad Parangal para sa Natatanging Overseas Pinoy was held on the 28th of June. Several outstanding expatriates in Qatar were recognized in their own field. The categories given were as followed: Education, Engineering & Construction Sector, Health & Medical Sector, Business & Entrepreneurship Sector, Sports, Health & Fitness Sector, Household Service Worker Sector, Journalism & Mass Comm., and Community & Social Services. Dr. Alexander S. Acosta, our school principal, was given the award for Outstanding Overseas Pinoy for Education in which he gracefully accepted for he is an embodiment of a hardworking Filipino and is an inspiration to many.
Overall, This year's PIDC was truly a memorable experience for all. The event boasted a wide array of activities and events that all ages could enjoy while also appreciating and learning more of Filipino culture. The celebration shined light on the different regional and provincial festivities which highlights Filipino culture and values from all over Philippines. This just shows that despite the distance separating us from our home country, the Filipinos are always proud to showcase the beauty of our very own country - Philippines.
